They like places with large trees and lots of ground cover. This helps them find good places to hide.

These lizards have many special ways of working. They use a forked tongue to sense the world around them. This tongue is used for sensing rather than moving food. Their lungs have spongy tissue to help them breathe well. This allows them to have a faster metabolic rate. This means they can stay very active.

They also have teeth that are fused to their jaw bones. They are polyphyodont, which means they grow new teeth to replace old ones. About four new teeth grow for every tooth each year.

Scientists have studied these lizards for a long time. One researcher named Auffenberg wrote about them in 1994. The Bengal monitor is part of a group called the V. bengalensis species complex. This means there are closely related species in the group. For example, the clouded monitor lives to the east. You can tell them apart by looking at their scales. Clouded monitors have large scales near their eyes. The number of scales on their bellies also changes by location.

There are many interesting facts about their bodies.

A male can be much larger than a female. Heavy lizards might weigh nearly 10 kilograms. Young monitors are much more colorful than the adults. They have dark bars on their necks and yellow spots. Adults are usually light brown or grey with dark spots. They can even close their slit-like nostrils to keep out water.
