There are two living types in this group. One is the banded linsang. The other is the spotted linsang.

These animals have very distinct patterns on their coats. Some have large spots that turn into broad bands. Their tails also have stripes that go across them. This makes them easy to spot in the wild.

These animals have a very specific way they are built. Their heads are long with a narrow muzzle. The tail is quite long for their size. It is almost as long as the head and body. Their teeth are also very specialized for eating. They have sharp teeth that look like those of a cat. These teeth include narrow, sharp points called cusps. This helps them eat in a way similar to cats.

Scientists have studied how these animals are related to others. For a long time, people thought they were related to civets. This was based on how their bodies looked. They have a skull that is long and narrow. Their bones show a mix of many different features. Some parts look like falanoucs or African palm civets. This made their family tree a hard job to solve.

We know much more now thanks to history and science. Thomas Horsfield first described the linsang in 1822. He found his first specimen on the island of Java. Later, John Edward Gray placed them in a different group in 1864. In 2025, scientists found a third species in China. This extinct type is named Prionodon hualongensis. It was found through the study of old fossils.

Today, we use DNA to understand their true family. DNA is the code inside living things. This testing shows linsangs are a sister taxon to cats. A sister taxon is a very close relative. They belong to a group called Felidae, which are cats. They share a special bone in their back. This bone is made of fused sacral vertebrae.
