It features a well-defined occipital, which is the part of the skull at the back of the head. The skull also has a strong crest, though it lacks a complete sagittal crest. The teeth are highly specialized for their diet. They show an approach to the teeth of cats, though they are more primitive. This means they are an older version of those specialized dental structures. Their dental formula is 3/2, 1/1, 2/2, 3/3.

Their teeth include several complex parts used for eating. The incisors form a straight transverse line rather than a curved one. The first three upper and four lower premolars are compressed and trenchant. Trenchant means they are sharp and adapted for cutting. These teeth have a high, sharp, median cusp, which is a pointed part in the middle. They also have smaller subsidiary cusps located in front and behind the main one. The upper carnassial tooth is also specialized. This tooth has a small inner lobe and a blade-like posterior cusp. The upper molar is triangular and much smaller than the carnassial.

Taxonomy, the science of naming and classifying life, has changed for the linsang. Thomas Horsfield first described the genus in 1822. He based his work on a specimen from Java. He originally placed them in the genus Felis. This was because they shared traits with both Viverra and Felis. In 1864, John Edward Gray moved them to the tribe Prionodontina. He placed them within the Viverridae family. Later, Reginald Innes Pocock followed Gray's ideas. He thought their similarities to other animals might just be adaptive traits.

For a long time, the linsang's place in nature was a mystery. Their skeletons are a mosaic of different features. They share cranial and dental traits with falanoucs, African palm civets, and oyans. This mix of traits made it hard to group them correctly. However, DNA analysis has provided new answers. By studying the DNA of 29 different carnivore species, scientists found the truth. This molecular evidence shows that Prionodon is indeed the sister-group to the Felidae. Because of this, they are now placed in their own family, Prionodontidae.

We can also see physical evidence of this link in their bones. Linsangs and cats share a physical synapomorphy. A synapomorphy is a shared characteristic that comes from a common ancestor. In this case, it is the presence of specialized fused sacral vertebrae. These are bones in the lower back that have grown together. This discovery helps confirm what the DNA showed. Even more recent discoveries continue to add to our knowledge. In 2025, scientists described a third, extinct species named Prionodon hualongensis. This species was identified using fossils found in China.
