Sunda clouded leopard

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Sunda clouded leopard (Neofelis diardi) is a medium-sized wild cat. It lives only on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. This species is currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. This means the population is likely decreasing. Experts estimate there are fewer than 10,000 mature individuals left in the wild.

This cat has several unique physical traits. Its fur is a grayish yellow or gray color. It features small, irregular cloud-like patterns on its shoulders. These markings often contain spots inside them. The patterns form two or more vertical rows along its flanks. The cat has a stocky build and a very long tail. This tail can be as long as its entire body. The long tail helps the cat maintain balance while moving.

There are specific biological mechanisms that make this cat special. Its pupils can contract into thin vertical slits. It is also able to purr. This is possible because its hyoid bone is ossified, meaning it has turned into bone. One of its most striking features is its canine teeth. These teeth are very long in proportion to the length of its skull. In fact, they are longer than the canine teeth of any other living cat.

Scientists have worked to understand the history of this species. Georges Cuvier proposed the scientific name in 1823. He named it to honor Pierre-Médard Diard. Diard had sent a skin and a drawing to a museum in France. For a long time, this cat was considered a subspecies. However, a 2006 study changed this view. Researchers used molecular genetic analysis on hair samples. They found differences in mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA. This proved the Sunda clouded leopard is a distinct species from the mainland clouded leopard.

The evolutionary history of these cats is tied to changing geography. Scientists believe the two species diverged between 2 and 0.9 million years ago. Their last common ancestor likely crossed a land bridge that is now underwater. The Sunda clouded leopard also has two distinct subspecies. These are the Bornean clouded leopard (N. d. borneensis) and the Sumatran clouded leopard (N. d. diardi). This split likely happened during the Middle to Late Pleistocene. It may have been caused by the massive Toba Volcano eruption 69,000 to 77,000 years ago.

Habitat and population density vary by location. In Borneo, they live in lowland rainforests. They are also found in logged forests at lower densities. In Sumatra, they are more abundant in hilly, montane areas. In the Tabin Wildlife Reserve in Sabah, researchers estimated a density of 8 to 17 individuals per 100 square kilometers. In Sabah, the total population is roughly 1,500 to 3,200 individuals. However, only 275 to 585 of these live in large, protected reserves. On Sumatra, the density is much lower, at about 1.29 individuals per 100 square kilometers. This might be because they live alongside the Sumatran tiger.

The Sunda clouded leopard faces serious threats from human activity. Deforestation is a major problem in Indonesia and Malaysia. Since the early 1970s, much of the lowland forest in southern Sumatra has been cleared. Borneo also has one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world. In the mid-1980s, forests covered nearly 75% of Borneo. By 2005, that number dropped to only 52%.

Beyond habitat loss, illegal trade and poaching are dangerous. Between 2011 and 2019, authorities seized parts from 32 individuals. This included 17 live cats and several skins. Because they are forest-dependent, losing trees makes them very vulnerable. To help, projects like the Bornean Wild Cat and Clouded Leopard Project study their behavior. They use the clouded leopard as a flagship species to raise awareness for conservation.
