The leopard, known scientifically as Panthera pardus, is a large and highly adaptable wild cat. It is one of five living species within the genus Panthera. This group includes other famous big cats like lions, tigers, and jaguars.

Leopards are famous for their incredible ability to survive in many environments. They can live in thick rainforests, dry steppes, or high mountain areas. They even persist in some urban environments if they can find food and shelter. Because they live in so many places, they have the largest distribution of all wild cats.

A leopard's body is built for strength and stealth. They are slender and muscular with relatively short limbs and broad heads.

Their fur is soft and thick, with colors ranging from pale yellow to dark golden. The most striking feature is the dark spots arranged in patterns called rosettes. These rosettes are unique to every individual, much like a human fingerprint. This pattern provides essential camouflage. It helps the cat blend into patchy shadows in dense vegetation. This allows the leopard to stalk and ambush prey effectively.

They are opportunistic predators that hunt animals like primates and various ungulates. To protect their meals, leopards sometimes use their strength to drag prey up into trees.

Leopards have a complex social and biological life. They are generally solitary animals. This means they live and hunt alone, except during the mating season. Females also live alone while raising their young. A female typically gives birth to a litter of 2 to 4 cubs. These litters are born once every 15 to 24 months. Both males and females usually reach sexual maturity between 2 and 2.5 years of age. Some leopards also show special color variations. Melanistic leopards, often called black panthers, have dark fur caused by a recessive allele.

The history of how we classify leopards involves many scientists. Carl Linnaeus first described the species in 1758 as Felis pardus. In 1816, Lorenz Oken introduced the name Panthera to group spotted cats together. However, his classification was not immediately accepted by everyone. For a long time, scientists used names like Felis or Leopardus. In 1902, Joel Asaph Allen designated the leopard as the type species for Panthera. This means it serves as the standard example for the entire genus. Later, in 1917, Reginald Innes Pocock included tigers, lions, and jaguars in the Panthera group.

Today, scientists recognize eight valid subspecies of leopards.

These subspecies are spread across Africa and Asia. The African leopard is the most widespread subspecies. In Asia, there are many distinct types, such as the Indian leopard and the Javan leopard. The Amur leopard lives in the Russian Far East and northern China. Some subspecies are in serious trouble. The Arabian leopard is the smallest subspecies and is critically endangered. As of 2023, only 100 to 120 of these leopards were estimated to live in Oman and Yemen.

The Indochinese leopard is also listed as critically endangered.

Evolutionary studies show that leopards have a long and interesting history. The oldest clear fossils of leopards come from Eastern Africa and date back 2 million years.

Leopards migrated from Africa into Eurasia during the late Early to Middle Pleistocene. They were once found across much of Europe. However, they became extinct in Europe around the end of the Late Pleistocene. Genetic research shows that leopards are closely related to lions. In fact, a 2016 study suggested that the ancestors of leopards, lions, and snow leopards may have hybridized at some point. This means they shared genetic material during their evolutionary journey.

Despite their success, leopards face major modern challenges. They are currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Their populations are declining in many parts of their global range. The main causes of this decline are habitat loss and habitat fragmentation. When their homes are broken into small pieces, it is harder for them to survive. In West Africa, the leopard's range has declined by an estimated 95 percent. In the Sahara desert, it has declined by 97 percent. Protecting their habitats is vital for the future of these magnificent cats.
