Most Panthera cats can roar. This happens because of their larynx. The larynx is a part of the throat. It has large vocal folds that let them make loud sounds. The snow leopard is different. It has shorter vocal folds. This means it cannot roar. These cats can make a soft snorting sound called prusten. They use this sound to say hello to friends.

Many big cats lived long ago but are now extinct. The American lion was one of these cats. It was one of the largest in the group. Scientists use fossils to study these old cats. Fossils are the remains of animals from the past. These bones help us learn how cats changed over time.
