A genus is a rank in science. It sits above a species but below a family.

Every species has a two-part name. This is called binomial nomenclature.

The first part is the genus name. The second part is the species name. For example, a lion is *Panthera leo*. A jaguar is *Panthera onca*. Both belong to the genus *Panthera*. This tells us they are close relatives.

Taxonomists are the experts who decide these names. They look for three main things. They want the group to be distinct. This means the group looks or acts different from others. They also want the group to be compact. This means the group is not too big. Finally, all members must come from one ancestor.

There are many genera in our world.
