Scientists use many groups to study life. One group is called a class.

A class is a way to group related orders. An order is a smaller group of living things. In the big list of life, a class sits in the middle. It is between a phylum and an order.

Long ago, a man named Joseph Pitton de Tournefort used this idea. He used it for plants in 1694. Later, Carl Linnaeus used classes too. He split plants, animals, and minerals into classes.

Linnaeus used classes to make a helpful key. He looked at how flowers were set up. For animals, his classes are like the ones we use today. But for plants, they were different.

Some people say a class shows how complex a living thing is. This means how its body parts work together. Experts decide which things go in each class. Today, many plant scientists use different ways to group life. They often look at groups called clades.
