Scientists use special groups to study all living things. One of these groups is called a class.

A class is a way to group related orders together. In the big list of life, a class sits in the middle. It sits between a phylum and an order. Other groups include domains, kingdoms, families, genera, and species. This system helps us organize the natural world.

A class often shows a certain level of complexity. This means how different a living thing's body parts are. It looks at how organ systems are laid out. These systems might be split into distinct regions. A class might also show a specific type of construction. This refers to the way those body parts work together. Experts use their own judgment to decide these groups.

People have used this idea for a long time. A French botanist named Joseph Pitton de Tournefort used it first. He used the term for plants in 1694. He wrote about this in his book, Eléments de botanique. Later, Carl Linnaeus used classes in his own work. He published his book, Systema Naturae, in 1735.

Linnaeus divided the kingdoms of minerals, plants, and animals. His animal classes are still similar to ours today. His plant classes were different from natural groups. He used them as an artificial key for flowers. This was part of his Systema Sexuale. In the nineteenth century, George Cuvier introduced new ideas. Ernst Haeckel later called these new groups phyla.

Today, the way we use classes is changing. Many plant scientists use the APG system from 1998. This system often uses informal groups called clades. For flowering plants, ranks above orders are often clades. Some scientists still use formal ranks for land plants. They might use the class Equisitopsida for them. They then use subclasses and superorders for smaller groups.
