Social class

society Maturity 11-13 Vital Level 3 Next article →

Social class is a way to group people into different levels.

These groups are often called social strata. Most people use three common categories. These are the working class, the middle class, and the upper class. Membership in a class often depends on many things. These include your job, your income, and your education. It can also depend on your wealth or your social networks. Scientists like sociologists study these groups to understand how society works.

Different thinkers have different ways to explain how class works. Karl Marx had a famous idea about this. He believed class was based on who owned the tools and land. In his view, the bourgeoisie were the people who owned these things. The proletariat were the workers who did not own them. They had to sell their labor to survive. Another thinker named Max Weber had a different view. He said class was about economic position. However, he also said social status was about prestige or respect.

We can see class systems in history going back a long time.

In Ancient Egypt, the social order was very clear. Wealthy people were at the top of the system. Scribes and officials were part of the upper class. They were even called the "white kilt class" because of their clothes. Farmers made up most of the people in Egypt. They often worked on big building projects or irrigation. Even though the system was strict, it was not always impossible to change. A person from a humble background could sometimes reach a high post.

In the past, laws even controlled how people looked.

Some places had sumptuary laws. These laws told people what clothes or jewelry they could wear. Only the high ranks or the aristocracy could wear very fancy things. In Europe, these laws were very common during the Middle Ages. Over time, things began to change in the late 18th century. The idea of class started to replace older systems like estates or ranks. Wealth and income became more important than what family you were born into.

Today, social class still affects many parts of life.

Research shows that large differences in class can impact health. In some places, people in different classes have very different life expectancies. For example, studies in Stockholm showed an 18-year difference in life expectancy between two areas. People in lower classes may also receive different levels of education or care. Class systems still exist in many places like India and Nepal. Understanding class helps us see how power and resources are shared in our world.
