They often have the most wealth in a society. They also hold a lot of political power. This group is part of a larger system called social stratification. This system divides people into different levels like the middle class or working class. In many places, being in the upper class means having a lot of influence. This influence can change how a country is run.

How someone joins this class can change depending on the time and place. In the past, status often came from your family. You were born into a noble family and held a title. This was called being an aristocrat. Many of these people owned large amounts of land. They did not always have to work for a living. Instead, they lived off money from land or investments.

In some cultures, these people were very different from merchants who worked for money.

History shows that these groups have shifted many times. In Great Britain and Ireland, the upper class included the aristocracy and the landed gentry. Most of these families actually started in the merchant class. They gained noble titles between the 14th and 19th centuries.

In the Republic of Ireland, this class has almost vanished since 1922. In Spain's American colonies, the upper class was made of people from Europe. They followed many European trends in their daily lives.

In the United States, the upper class is a very small group. It is estimated to be less than 1% of the population.

Many members are successful CEOs, celebrities, or investment bankers. Some are even billionaires. In 2004, there were 374 billionaires in the U.S. The average net worth for the Forbes 400 list grew to $2.8 billion. The top 1% of Americans own about 34% of the wealth. This is much higher than the bottom 80% who own 16%.

Understanding the upper class helps us see how societies work. It shows how wealth and power can be shared or kept by a few. Some people call the most powerful group the "Donor Class." This group is very small, making up just one-quarter of 1 percent. Even though they are few, their money can buy a lot of access. Looking at these groups helps us see how social rules change over time. It shows the difference between old traditions and new ways of making money.
