Social status is a way people judge social value. It is the level of respect or honor a person receives.

High status can bring many good things to a person. These include better health, more resources, and more influence. People with high status also have more freedom. On the other hand, people with low status often have poorer outcomes. This happens across many different parts of life. Status is based on what a society believes is important. It can be based on success or on things like race.

Status works through the use of special signs. These are called status symbols. People agree that certain things show a person's rank. For example, having a prestigious degree is a symbol. Being beautiful can also be a symbol of status. Wealth is another symbol when people show it off. Even how a person acts can show status. This includes how they stand or how they speak. Being popular can also increase a person's status. Some groups even gain status by having well-respected partners.

Many thinkers have studied how status works in society. A sociologist named Max Weber wrote about this long ago. He said status is one of three main parts of social life. He linked status to the honor people feel for certain groups. Other experts like Stanley Wasserman and Katherine Faust Stanley studied social networks. They noted that scientists sometimes disagree on certain definitions. They found that words like "status" and "position" can mean different things. These ideas help us understand how people fit together.

Status can be fixed or it can change. Some status is called ascribed status. This is something a person has from the moment they are born. Examples include race or being part of a caste. Other status is called achieved status. This is earned through hard work and effort. A person might achieve status through a job or school.

Status is also relative to the people around you. A doctor has high status with a patient. That same doctor has low status with a chief of medicine. You might be a big fish in a small pond. This means you have high status in one small group. But you might have low status in a larger field.

Status is not just a human thing. Many animals use status to survive in their groups. Apes, wolves, and even ants have social hierarchies.

In animals, status can help them have more offspring. This helps the species continue to grow and live. For humans, status helps groups make quick decisions. It helps people agree on who should lead a task. However, status can also keep things unequal in a society. It can make unfair rules seem like they are natural. This is why studying status is so important for understanding our world.
