Social inequality happens when things are not shared equally among people.

In these societies, resources are often distributed in uneven patterns. These patterns can be based on many different categories of people. Some people might have more power, money, or prestige than others. Factors like race, gender, age, and religion can influence this. It also affects how people access important goods. These include things like good housing, schools, and banking services.

Societies can be grouped into different types based on how they treat people. Egalitarian societies try to share everything equally. In these groups, leaders only have influence rather than real power. No one is seen as better just because they have special skills. Ranked societies are different and often involve farming communities. In these groups, a chief holds a high status. The chief's family and relatives are also ranked highly.

Stratified societies use a system of different classes. These are usually called the upper, middle, and lower classes. This ranking is often based on wealth and power.

There are five main ways to look at these inequalities. Wealth inequality is about the gap in money people have. Political inequality happens when people cannot access government resources equally. Treatment inequality occurs when some people get more privileges than others. This often happens in systems where one group has dominance. Membership inequality can involve the size of a family or a faith. Finally, life inequality is about having different chances to improve one's quality of life.

People's place in society is shaped by two kinds of characteristics. Ascribed characteristics are things you are born with. These include your skin color, your gender, or where you were born. You have very little control over these traits. Achieved characteristics are things you earn or choose for yourself. Examples include your level of education or your job status. Most people have a mix of both types. In some places, people cannot change their status at all. This is known as caste inequality.

Different ideas, or ideologies, exist to explain these patterns. Some people believe in individualism and free markets. They may think that inequality is a natural part of life. Others believe in collectivism and want to reduce these gaps. They believe that groups should work together to ensure fairness. Globalization is also changing how inequality works around the world. It connects different cultures and societies more closely than before. This can sometimes make global inequalities even larger.
