Poverty is a condition where people lack the money needed for a basic standard of living.

It means not having enough for essentials like food, clothing, and a safe home. The United Nations says poverty is a denial of choices and human dignity. It can also mean not having a school, a clinic, or a job. This lack of resources makes it very hard to participate in society. Many different things can cause or affect poverty in different ways.

Experts use two main ways to measure poverty. The first way is called absolute poverty. This looks at whether a person can afford basic human needs like water and shelter. The second way is called relative poverty. This compares a person's income to the people living around them. For example, someone is in relative poverty if they cannot afford what most neighbors have.

These different measures help leaders understand how to help people.

History shows that people have long worked to define and measure these needs. The word poverty comes from the Old French word "poverté." In 1990, experts introduced the "dollar a day" line to measure survival. The World Bank has updated this number many times over the years. In 2015, they set the line at $1.90 per day.

Different countries also use their own specific lines to track their citizens.

Real numbers show how many people face these hard challenges today. About 10% of the world lives on less than $1.90 per day. In 2020, the World Bank found that 40% of the poor live in countries with conflict. Some experts believe the scale of poverty is much larger than official numbers show. They suggest as many as 4.3 billion people live on less than $5 a day.

Many social forces can make poverty even harder for certain groups. Women, children, and minorities often carry an unequal burden of poverty.

Natural disasters and climate change also make life difficult for the poor. Even when a country gets richer, the poorest people may not see that wealth. To help, the United Nations set a goal called "No Poverty" in 2015.
