Social inequality is the uneven distribution of resources within a society.

It creates distinct patterns where some people have more access to social goods than others. These goods include things like education, housing, and the judicial system. Inequality is often linked to economic inequality, which focuses on the distribution of income and wealth. However, social status can also be influenced by non-economic resources. Factors like power, religion, kinship, and prestige play significant roles. Other factors include race, ethnicity, gender, age, and sexual orientation.

Understanding this process helps us see how societies value different people.

Societies can be categorized into three main types based on their structure. Egalitarian societies advocate for social equality through equal rights and opportunities. In these groups, people with special skills are not viewed as superior. Leaders in egalitarian societies hold influence rather than absolute power. Ranked societies are often agricultural communities with a clear hierarchy. A chief holds the highest status, followed by their family and relatives. Finally, stratified societies are organized into horizontal layers. These are usually called the upper, middle, and lower classes.

This stratification is based on wealth, power, and prestige.

There are five specific systems of social inequality to consider. Political inequality occurs when people have different levels of access to government resources. This results in a lack of civic equality. Treatment and responsibility inequality happens when certain groups receive more privileges. This often occurs in systems where one group holds dominance. Membership inequality relates to the size or nature of a family, nation, or faith. Life inequality describes the disparity in opportunities that affect a person's quality of life. Lastly, income and wealth inequality measures the gap in what individuals earn.

An individual's social status is determined by two types of characteristics. Ascribed characteristics are present at birth, such as skin color, gender identity, or place of birth. An individual has little to no control over these traits. Achieved characteristics are those a person earns or chooses. Examples include marital status, level of education, or leadership roles. Most people have a social status that combines both factors. In some societies, only ascribed characteristics matter. This leads to caste inequality, where there is very little social mobility.

In such systems, people cannot move between different social layers.

Social location affects almost every aspect of a person's life chances. The best predictor of a person's future status is the status they were born into. Researchers use various theoretical approaches to study these patterns. They ask how resources are allocated and how human cooperation or conflict plays a role. They also look at how these inequalities affect the overall functioning of a society. These variables can change depending on the time and the place.

Studying these theories helps explain why different societies develop different levels of inequality.

Ideologies offer different views on whether inequality is desirable or inevitable. Individualist ideologies, often found in Western societies, focus on individual ownership. Concepts like laissez-faire and neoliberalism suggest that inequality is a natural feature of society. These views argue that inequality can spur ambition and innovation. On the other end, collectivist ideologies like socialism argue that inequality must be reduced. They believe that collective regulation can create more fairness.

These groups often distrust free-market systems because of unequal access to markets.

Globalization is a major force that connects cultures and societies worldwide. While it reduces the distance between people, it can also increase global inequities. Some theories suggest that economic factors like deindustrialization create a 'left-behind' group. This group may face low job security and wage stagnation. This can lead to political shifts and populist movements. In the United States, wealth inequality increased significantly between 1989 and 2013.
