Status can come from many things. Some status is given at birth. This is called ascribed status. It can be based on race or beauty. Other status is earned through hard work. This is called achieved status. A person might earn this through a job. They might earn it through school.

People use status symbols to show their rank. A symbol is a sign that others see. Wealth can be a status symbol. A fancy degree is another symbol. Even how a person speaks can show status. Status can change very fast. A doctor has high status with a patient. But that doctor has low status with a chief. Status is not just for humans. Many animals have status too. Apes, wolves, and even ants have ranks. This helps animals survive in their groups.
