High self-esteem can help you in many ways. It is linked to doing well in school. It can lead to more happiness. It may even help your physical health. Low self-esteem can cause anxiety or loneliness.

Many thinkers have studied this idea. Abraham Maslow put self-esteem in his hierarchy of needs. This is a list of things people need to grow. He said we need respect from others. We also need self-respect. Self-respect means having self-love and confidence.

How you grow affects your self-esteem. In early life, parents are very important. They help by being kind and listening. They show love even when mistakes happen. This helps a child feel cared for. Being criticized harshly can lead to low self-esteem. Researchers use scales to measure these feelings. One famous tool is the Rosenberg self-esteem scale. It uses ten items to check how you feel.
