Most sloths live in tropical rainforest trees. They spend much of their lives hanging upside down. There are six living species of sloths today. These include two-toed sloths and three-toed sloths.

Sloths move slowly to save power. They eat leaves, which do not give much energy. Being slow also helps them hide from predators like cats.

Green algae, which are tiny plants, grow in their hair. This helps them hide in the trees. The algae also give the sloth nutrients. Some moths live in their hair, too.

Long ago, many sloths lived on the ground. These were called ground sloths. Some were as big as elephants!

One was named Megatherium. These giant animals lived in North and South America. Most ground sloths died out about 11,000 years ago. This may have happened because of climate change. It may also have been because of humans.
