This sloth was very big. It had flat feet and a stout tail. These parts helped it stand up on its back legs. This let it reach plants to eat. It had three large claws on its hands. These claws helped it grab things or defend itself.

Thomas Jefferson was a famous leader in the United States. He was also one of the first people to study fossils in North America. In 1799, he described bones found in a cave. He named the animal Megalonyx. This name means "great-claw" in Greek. Later, scientists named the species jeffersonii to honor him. These sloths lived in many places. They lived in most of the United States and even Alaska. Eventually, these sloths died out. This happened at the end of the Pleistocene age. Some bones show marks from stone tools. This suggests that humans may have hunted them.
