Macrauchenia was very big. It weighed about 1 tonne. Its body looked like a camel. It had a long neck. It also had three toes on each foot. Its nose was very strange. The nose opening was on top of its skull. Some think it had a lip like a moose. Others think it used its nose to filter dust.

This animal was a mixed feeder. This means it ate both grass and woody plants. It likely lived in herds. It may have traveled long distances to find food. Macrauchenia was a fast runner. A large cat called Smilodon might have hunted it. The animal went extinct about 12,000 years ago. Some scientists think humans may have hunted it. This happened during a time when many large animals died out.
