Stegodonts were a family of large animals. They lived in Africa and Asia. They also lived in one part of Europe. These animals are now extinct. This means they no longer live on Earth.

Their name comes from Greek words. The words mean "to cover tooth." This is because of their teeth. They had flat ridges on their teeth. These ridges are called lophs. These lophs look like the teeth of modern elephants. Scientists think these teeth grew that way on their own. This is called convergent evolution.

There were two main groups in this family. One was Stegolophodon. It lived in Asia a long time ago. The other was Stegodon. It lived in Africa and Asia. Some think Stegodon came from Stegolophodon. Stegodonts also moved their jaws in a special way. They moved their lower jaw forward. This helped them eat. Scientists still study how they fit with other animals. They might be related to mastodons. Mastodons are another type of old, large animal.
