The Pskov Republic was a city-state located in northwestern Russia.

Its main city was Pskov, and its land covered much of what we now call the Pskov Oblast. For many years, Pskov was part of the Novgorod Republic. A leader from Novgorod, called a posadnik, helped manage the city. However, Pskov was special because it could have its own smaller boroughs. One of these very old areas was called Izborsk. The people of Pskov often worked to rule themselves. They even had a period of independence from 1228 to 1242.

Getting independence was a step-by-step process involving many leaders. In 1327, the people of Pskov gave shelter to Prince Aleksandr of Tver. This was a difficult choice because the church later punished the people for helping him. Later, in 1348, a Swedish leader named Magnus IV captured a fort called Orekhov. The Pskovites saw a chance to gain more freedom during this time. They agreed to help the Novgorod army only if they were granted independence. This led to the Treaty of Bolotovo in 1348.

Under this treaty, Pskov could choose its own representatives for law courts. They promised to help Novgorod if it was ever attacked.

History shows that Pskov had to navigate many powerful neighbors. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania often tried to influence the city. Sometimes Pskov invited Lithuanian princes to rule them. In 1352, a terrible sickness called the Black Death reached Pskov. Hundreds of people died every day during this hard time. Later, leaders from Moscow began to gain more power in the region. By the end of the 1400s, Moscow's influence grew very strong.

Pskov had to balance its own laws with the needs of these growing lands.

Many specific dates and names shaped the final years of the republic. In 1449, Grand Prince Vasily II signed treaties that gave Moscow authority over Pskov. For a while, Pskov still acted like a free city. They could make treaties with other countries without asking for permission. However, things changed in 1462 when Grand Prince Ivan III began to take more control. He made rules about how many representatives Pskov could have. By 1494, Pskov was clearly part of the lands ruled by Moscow.

The city's local laws stayed in place, but its freedom was fading.

Finally, the era of the Pskov Republic came to an end in the early 1500s. Grand Prince Vasily III wanted to rule everything directly. In 1510, he took away the veche bell from the city. This bell was used to call people to important meetings. He also moved the bell to Moscow. Vasily III arrested many city officials to stop any more protests. He replaced many families with people who were loyal to him.
