This era lasted from the early 1600s until the early 1700s. During this time, Sweden controlled much of the land around the Baltic Sea. They even had colonies far away in the New World and Africa.

One of these places was called New Sweden. It was located in the Delaware River valley. Sweden also had trading posts along the coast of West Africa. This period changed how people saw Sweden in the world.

Sweden grew its power through many wars and clever leaders.

King Gustavus Adolphus took the throne in 1611. He led Sweden during the Thirty Years' War. This war was very hard for many people. Some historians say the population of the Holy Roman Empire fell by one-third. After the war ended in 1648, Sweden gained new lands in Germany. These lands were given to Sweden as reparations for the war. This helped Sweden become a major leader in Europe.

Leaders had to manage many different lands and people.

After Gustavus Adolphus died in 1632, noble families often helped rule. They acted as regents for kings who were still very young. Later, Queen Christina faced big money problems. Her spending brought the state close to bankruptcy. This caused many people to feel unhappy. King Charles X Gustav later worked to fix these issues. He was a soldier but also a smart politician. He helped bring unity back to the country.

Sweden reached its biggest size under King Charles X Gustav.

In 1658, he won a war against Denmark-Norway. The Treaty of Roskilde forced Denmark-Norway to give up much land. Sweden gained places like Scania and Halland. At this time, Sweden was the third-largest area in Europe. Only Russia and Spain were larger. Sweden controlled about 1,100,000 square kilometers of land. The Baltic Sea acted like a bond between all these far-off places. Stockholm was the center of this huge empire.

Eventually, the empire began to lose its strength.

King Charles XII led a military campaign into Russia. This ended with a big defeat at the Battle of Poltava. This loss stopped Sweden from taking more land. By the time Charles XII died in 1718, the empire was much smaller. The Great Northern War ended in 1721 and marked the end of the era. Later, in 1809, Finland was given to Russia. Sweden's last lands in Germany were also lost after the Napoleonic Wars. The age of the great empire was over.
