The Swedish Empire was a period when Sweden became a major European great power.

This era lasted from the early 17th century until the early 18th century. During this time, Sweden controlled much of the Baltic Sea region. It also held territories on the North Sea and several overseas colonies. One such colony was New Sweden, located in the Delaware River valley.

Sweden also built forts and trading posts along the West African coast. This era changed Sweden from a smaller nation into a dominant force in Europe.

Sweden's rise to power began with King Gustavus Adolphus, who took the throne in 1611.

He led Sweden during the Thirty Years' War. This conflict changed the map of Europe and the religion of many states. Sweden participated as a leader of Protestantism. During this war, Sweden conquered about half of the member states in the Holy Roman Empire. However, the war was very destructive. Historians estimate the population of the Holy Roman Empire fell by one-third due to the fighting.

After the Thirty Years' War ended, the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 granted Sweden new lands.

These lands served as war reparations. Sweden gained Swedish Pomerania, which included the islands of Rügen, Usedom, and Wollin. They also gained the towns of Stettin, Greifswald, and Stralsund. Other territories included the town of Wismar and the bishoprics of Bremen-Verden. These German possessions allowed Sweden to have a vote in the Imperial Diet. This gave the empire significant political influence within the Holy Roman Empire.

Managing such a large empire required strong domestic leadership. After Gustavus Adolphus died in 1632, high nobility often ruled as regents for young monarchs. For example, the Oxenstierna family held power for long periods. Queen Christina later faced massive financial difficulties due to her spending. This brought the state close to bankruptcy and caused public unrest.

King Charles X Gustav later worked to stabilize the country. He was both a soldier and a sharp politician. He focused on domestic unity to support a strong foreign policy.

Sweden reached its greatest size under the rule of Charles X Gustav.

In 1658, the Treaty of Roskilde ended a war with Denmark–Norway. This treaty forced Denmark–Norway to give up a third of its territory. Sweden gained provinces such as Scania, Halland, Blekinge, and Bohuslän. At this peak, Sweden was the third-largest area of control in Europe. Only Russia and Spain had larger land areas. The empire covered about 1,100,000 square kilometers of land.

Despite its size, the empire faced constant challenges from its neighbors. The Baltic Sea acted as a bond between many different territories. The empire included all the islands in the Baltic, except for the Danish group. The capital, Stockholm, sat at the center of these widely dispersed lands. The second largest city was Riga, located across the sea. However, the empire was not very crowded. It had about 2,500,000 people, which was only a quarter of modern Sweden's population. This meant there were only about 2.3 people per square kilometer.

The decline of the empire began during the Great Northern War.

King Charles XII led a campaign into Russia that ended in a major defeat. This happened at the Battle of Poltava. This defeat stopped Swedish expansion and weakened the military. By the time Charles XII died in 1718, the empire was greatly diminished. The Great Northern War ended in 1721, marking the end of the great power era. Later, in 1809, Finland was ceded to Russia. Sweden's last continental territory, Swedish Pomerania, was eventually given to Denmark after the Napoleonic Wars.
