history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Long ago, three lands joined under one ruler.

This group was called the Kalmar Union. It included Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. It also included places like Finland and Iceland. Queen Margaret of Denmark helped make this happen. She wanted the lands to be strong. They wanted to stop German trade groups from growing too big. The union started in 1397 in a place called Kalmar.

But the lands did not always get along. The kings wanted a strong, single state. The noble leaders in Sweden and Denmark wanted more power for themselves. This caused many fights and breaks in the union. In Sweden, people grew angry about high taxes. They also struggled to sell iron to other lands.

After many years of struggle, the union ended. A man named Gustav Vasa led a rebellion. He fought against the Danish king. Gustav was elected King of Sweden in 1523. This meant Sweden was finally free from the union.
