Erik was born in Pomerania around 1381 or 1382. His parents were Duke Wartislaw VII and Duchess Maria. His great-aunt, Queen Margaret I, was a very powerful leader. She wanted the Nordic lands to stay united and peaceful. Because of this, she chose him to be her heir.

When he was a boy, he moved to Denmark to be raised by the Queen. His name was even changed from Bogusław to the Nordic name Erik.

Erik became king of several lands through a series of steps. He was first hailed as King of Norway in 1389. In 1396, he was proclaimed king in Denmark and Sweden. A big moment happened on June 17, 1397. He was crowned king of all three countries in the cathedral of Kalmar.

At this time, a treaty was written to start the Kalmar Union. Even though Erik was king, Margaret I stayed the real ruler until she died in 1412. Erik later married Philippa of England in 1406 to make a strong alliance.

As a king, Erik was known for being very energetic and smart. He made Copenhagen a royal possession in 1417. This helped make it the capital of Denmark.

He also built a strong fortress called Krogen in the Sound. This was a narrow path that ships used to enter the Baltic Sea. In 1429, he started the Sound Dues. This was a rule that required ships to pay money to pass through.

This new way of collecting money made his kingdom much richer. It also helped the town of Elsinore grow.

However, Erik's time as king was also full of hard jobs and fights. He spent much of his rule fighting the Counts of Schauenburg and Holstein. These wars were very expensive and hurt the economy.

He also fought with the German Hanseatic League between 1426 and 1435. These conflicts caused many people to become unhappy with his leadership. In Sweden, a man named Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson led a rebellion in 1434.

In Norway, other people also started rebellions to protest his rule. These many fights made it hard for him to keep the union together.

Because of these problems, Erik eventually lost his power. The leaders in Denmark and Sweden removed him from his thrones in 1439.
