He lived during a time of great change for his country. Before he was king, he helped lead a war for freedom. This war helped Sweden leave the Kalmar Union. This union was a group that joined Denmark, Norway, and Sweden together. Gustav wanted Sweden to be its own independent land. He was born into a noble family around the year 1496.

Life was very difficult for Gustav as a young man. He was once held as a hostage in Kalø Castle. King Christian II of Denmark held him there to try and change his mind. Gustav stayed loyal to his own people and refused to switch sides. Later, he escaped and fled to the city of Lübeck. He even used a disguise to get away safely. Some stories say he dressed as a bullocky to hide. People even gave him funny nicknames because of this escape.

Things became even harder after a violent event in Stockholm. This event was called the Stockholm Bloodbath in 1520. During this time, many people were killed, including Gustav's father. Gustav had to leave his home to stay safe. He traveled to the province of Dalarna to find help. At first, it was hard to find soldiers to fight. He even had to flee all the way to Norway. This long trip through the snow is now a famous story. It is the reason for the big ski race called Vasaloppet.

Gustav eventually found the strength to lead a rebellion. He gathered a force of 400 men in early 1521. His army grew larger as more people joined his cause. He gained help from the city of Lübeck to fight the Danish forces. In June 1523, leaders met in Strängnäs to make a big decision. They chose Gustav to be the new king of Sweden.

This election was a very special moment for the nation. It marked the end of the long union with Denmark.

After becoming king, Gustav made many big changes. He made the kingship a family matter that passed from parent to child. He also built a strong navy and a standing army. He helped start the Protestant Reformation in Sweden too. On June 6, 1523, he made a grand entry into Stockholm.
