The Vikings were a seafaring group of people from Scandinavia. This region includes modern-day Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

They were active from the late 8th century to the late 11th century. This era is known as the Viking Age. While many people think of them as pirates, they were also traders, farmers, and craftsmen. They built a complex and advanced civilization that shaped early medieval history. Their influence reached across Europe, North Africa, and even North America.

To travel such vast distances, the Vikings relied on their expert navigation. They used characteristic longships to cross wide oceans and navigate rivers.

These ships allowed them to move through the Norwegian and Baltic Seas. They also used major river systems like the Dnieper and the Volga. In Eastern Europe, these travelers were often called Varangians. By using both sea and river routes, they connected distant parts of the world. This mobility allowed them to trade goods like furs, seal fat, and walrus tusks.

Vikings expanded through several different methods. Some groups went on raids or piratical attacks to gain wealth. Other groups focused on trade and establishing permanent settlements.

Some even acted as mercenaries for foreign leaders. For example, they served in the Varangian Guard for the Byzantine emperor. This elite unit of bodyguards was located in the Byzantine Empire. These different paths helped spread Norse culture to many foreign lands. This movement led to the creation of new groups like the Normans and the Icelanders.

During the Viking Age, the Scandinavian homelands underwent significant changes. The region transitioned from many small kingdoms into three larger ones. These became the nations of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

The people spoke a language called Old Norse and used a writing system known as runes. Most followed the Old Norse religion during this time. However, many people converted to Christianity between the 8th and 12th centuries. They also developed their own unique styles of art, architecture, and law.

The impact of these people on global history was profound. Their settlements helped form the Kievan Rus'. This state was the ancestor of modern Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine.

In the British Isles, they influenced the development of the English language. They also established governments in the Faroe Islands and Iceland. Some even reached Greenland and North America. They settled briefly in a place they called Vinland, located in modern Newfoundland, Canada.

Specific leaders and numbers show how much they influenced politics. Two Vikings actually became kings of England. Sweyn Forkbeard claimed the throne in 1013. His son, Cnut the Great, ruled England from 1016 to 1035.

In the Byzantine Empire, Swedish men emigrated in such large numbers that a law was made to stop them. The Västgötalagen law tried to prevent people from inheriting property if they stayed in "Greece." This shows how much their migrations changed the social structure of their homelands.

Modern views of the Vikings are often different from historical reality. In the 18th and 19th centuries, a "Viking revival" created romanticized images of them. These myths often portrayed them as noble savages or heroic warriors.

Many popular stereotypes are actually inaccurate. For instance, there is no evidence that Vikings wore horned helmets. That specific costume element was actually invented in the 19th century. Today, historians use archaeology to understand the true, complex nature of their society.
