Pier Gerlofs Donia was a famous farmer and rebel leader. He lived in a place called Friesland in the Netherlands. People often called him "Grutte Pier," which means "Big Pier." This name came from his legendary size and strength. He was born around 1480 near the city of Harlingen. His family lived in a village named Kimswerd. Pier had a wife named Rintsje Syrtsema and two children.

His life changed because of a very sad event. In 1515, a group of soldiers called the Black Band attacked his village. These soldiers were part of a civil war. They burned his estate and his village church to the ground. Sadly, they also killed his wife, Rintze. Pier wanted to fight back against these rulers. He joined a leader named Charles of Egmond to seek revenge.

Pier led a group of fighters known as the Arumer Zwarte Hoop. This name means the "Black Hope" of Arum. His group acted like pirates on the sea. They were very active on the Zuider Zee. They captured many ships from the Dutch and the English. In 1517, Pier led 4,000 soldiers to capture the town of Medemblik. He attacked the town because he felt they had helped his enemies.

Many stories say Pier had incredible strength. Some legends claim he could lift a horse over his head. Others say he could pull a plough himself without any horses. People even said he could bend coins using only three fingers. A very large sword is said to have belonged to him. It is now kept in the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden.
