This revolt was the largest popular uprising in Europe before the French Revolution. It involved many farmers and peasants who wanted more freedom. These people lived in many different areas of the Holy Roman Empire. They were upset about high taxes and unfair rules. The movement spread from southwestern Germany and Alsace to central and eastern Germany. It even reached parts of present-day Austria.

Many things caused the peasants to fight back. In the south, many nobles treated peasants very harshly. These leaders tried to force free people into serfdom. Serfdom meant people were tied to the land and had few rights. Princes also used Roman civil law to take more control. This law helped princes claim ownership of all the land. This took away the old rights that peasants once held.

The peasants also used religious ideas to explain their fight. They looked to the Protestant Reformation for hope. Some groups even wrote down their demands in a famous paper. This paper was called the Twelve Articles of the Swabian peasants.

Different leaders had very different views on the war. A radical preacher named Thomas Müntzer supported the peasants. He believed the uprising was an act of God. Müntzer helped organize rebel groups in Saxony and Thuringia. He even led a rebel army at the Battle of Frankenhausen in May 1525.

On the other hand, Martin Luther did not support the revolt. Luther was a very famous leader of the Reformation. At first, he was in the middle. Later, he sided completely with the rich rulers. He wrote a harsh book called Against the Murderous, Thieving Hordes of Peasants. He told the nobles to stop the rebels with great force.

The peasants faced very hard jobs during the fighting. Their movement was democratic, so they had no single command structure. They also lacked heavy weapons like artillery. Most peasants had no experience in military life. They did not have cavalry to help them fight.

In contrast, the noble armies were very well-equipped. The aristocrats had disciplined soldiers and plenty of money. They also had many experienced military leaders. This made it very hard for the peasants to win.

The war ended in a very sad way for the peasants. The noble armies were much stronger than the farmers. Up to 100,000 peasants were killed during the conflict. This was a huge number of people out of the 300,000 who fought.

The survivors were forced to pay large fines. Most of the goals the peasants wanted were not met. However, some veterans of the war later joined the Anabaptist movement. This war showed how much change was happening in Europe. It changed how people thought about power and religion.
