It was a major uprising of many different people. Some call it Wat Tyler's Rebellion or the Great Uprising. People were angry about how the country was being run. They felt the laws and taxes were not fair. This event changed how people thought about power and money. It is a famous part of English history.

Many things caused the people to rise up. In the 1340s, a sickness called the Black Death arrived. It killed about 50 percent of the people in England. Because so many people died, there were fewer workers left. This meant workers could ask for much higher pay.

However, the leaders passed laws to keep wages low. These laws made it a crime to refuse work. Some people were even punished with branding or jail.

War with France also caused big problems for the people. England was fighting in the Hundred Years' War. This war was very expensive for the royal government. For example, keeping soldiers in Calais and Brest cost £36,000 every year.

To pay for the war, the leaders asked for more taxes. They used a new type of tax called a poll tax. This tax was a set amount of money for every person. Many people in the south-east refused to pay it.

Things became very tense in the year 1381.

The government sent investigators to find people who did not pay. This made many local communities very angry. In London, the leaders were also fighting with each other. This made the city unstable and hard to control. In the countryside, people fought against the local courts. They did not like how the laws were applied to them.

Historians still study this event to understand its impact. Some say the revolt led to the end of serfdom. Serfdom was a system where people were tied to a lord's land.

Others are not so sure about how much things changed. The revolt has been used in many books and political arguments. It remains a strong symbol for people seeking fairness. It shows how much people care about their rights.
