The German Peasants' War was a massive popular uprising in Central Europe. It occurred between 1524 and 1525. This conflict remains one of the largest popular revolts in European history. It was not surpassed in scale until the French Revolution in 1789. The war involved hundreds of thousands of peasants and farmers. They fought against the ruling aristocracy in many German-speaking regions.

The revolt was driven by both economic and religious grievances. Many peasants were upset by high taxes and unfair treatment. In southern Germany, nobles tried to force free peasants into serfdom. Serfdom is a system where people are tied to a lord's land. Princes also used Roman civil law to consolidate their power. This legal system allowed them to claim personal ownership of all land. It replaced older feudal customs that gave peasants certain rights.

Religion played a central role in the movement's ideas. The uprising incorporated principles from the emerging Protestant Reformation. Peasants sought more influence and personal freedom through these new religious ideas. Some radical reformers supported their fight for political and legal rights. One famous document was the Twelve Articles of the Swabian peasants.

Different religious leaders reacted to the war in very different ways. Thomas Müntzer was a prominent radical preacher who supported the peasants. He believed the uprising was an apocalyptic act of God. Müntzer helped organize rebel groups in Saxony and Thuringia. He eventually led a rebel army at the Battle of Frankenhausen in May 1525.

His role in the war remains a subject of historical debate.

In contrast, Martin Luther took a much harder stance against the rebels. Luther was the dominant leader of the Reformation in Germany. Initially, he criticized both the injustices and the peasants' rashness. However, his position shifted completely during the height of the fighting. In May 1525, he wrote a harsh text called Against the Murderous, Thieving Hordes of Peasants. He urged the nobility to use extreme violence to stop the uprising.

The peasants faced massive obstacles during the actual fighting. Their movement was democratic, which meant they lacked a central command structure. They also lacked military experience, artillery, and cavalry. Most of the 300,000 peasants were poorly armed. The aristocratic armies were the opposite. They were well-funded, highly disciplined, and led by experienced military officers.

The war ended in a devastating defeat for the common people. The aristocracy fought back with intense and organized opposition. Up to 100,000 peasants were killed during the conflict. This was a large portion of the 300,000 who participated.

The survivors were forced to pay heavy fines to the rulers. Most of the peasants' original goals were never achieved.

Despite the defeat, the war had lasting connections to other movements. About 20 veterans of the conflict later became leaders in the Anabaptist movement. The war also highlighted the shifting power within the Holy Roman Empire. It showed the tension between the growing power of princes and the traditional rights of the people. The conflict reflected a Europe undergoing rapid social and religious change.
