The Hussite Wars were a series of civil wars in the land of Bohemia. These wars lasted from 1419 until about 1434. They were fought between the Hussites and many Catholic forces. These Catholic forces included the Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund and the Pope. Some European monarchs also joined the fight to support the Church. The Hussites were actually split into different groups during the conflict. One group was the moderate Utraquists, while the more radical group was the Taborites.

The fighting grew from religious disagreements. A priest named Jan Hus wanted to change the Church. He spoke against corruption and supported ideas from John Wycliffe. The Church did not agree with him. In 1415, Jan Hus was executed at the Council of Constance. This event made the people in Bohemia very angry. After King Wenceslaus IV died, the tension grew even stronger. Sigismund wanted to be the Emperor and tried to stop the Hussite movement.

War broke out in Prague in 1419. A group led by Jan Želivský attacked the New Town Hall. This event is known as the first Defenestration of Prague. Fighting spread across Bohemia as many Catholic Germans were forced out. A leader named Jan Žižka took control of the Hussite army. He was a talented general who led the people. He won important victories at the Battle of Sudoměř in 1420. Even when many crusaders came from Europe, the Hussites fought back hard.

The Hussites used very clever ways to fight. They used large transport carriages to make wagon forts. These forts helped them stay safe from horses. They also used early handheld guns called hand cannons. These guns were great because they did not need much training. At the Battle of Kutná Hora in 1421, they used moving wagon walls. This was a new way to use guns in a battle. The word for one type of gun used then later became the word "pistol."

Eventually, the long wars came to an end. In 1434, the moderate Utraquists defeated the radical Taborites. The Hussites agreed to follow the King of Bohemia. They were also allowed to practice their own religious rites. This allowed them to keep some of their traditions. The Hussite movement had a huge impact on the history of the region. It showed how common people could organize a strong military power.
