The oprichnina was a major state policy in Russia. It was led by Tsar Ivan the Terrible. This policy lasted from 1565 to 1572. It changed how the country was ruled. Ivan used it to control the boyars, who were the rich nobles. He also used it to take their land and property. This was a very difficult time for many Russian people.

This policy worked by dividing the country into two parts. One part was called the zemshchina. This was the land ruled by the Boyar Council. The other part was the oprichnina. This was a separate territory ruled directly by Ivan. He had his own rules and his own officials there. He even raised 100,000 rubles to pay for this new system. This allowed him to act without the usual legal limits.

Ivan started this because of wars and fears. In 1558, he began the Livonian War. This war was very expensive and lasted a long time. Russia also faced raids and famines during this period. In 1564, a leader named Prince Andrey Kurbsky left to join Lithuania. This made Ivan suspect that other nobles might betray him too. He felt he needed more power to keep his land safe.

To enforce his rule, Ivan created the oprichniki. These men were his personal guard and police. They were often called the "men of oprichnina." They swore a special oath to be true only to the Tsar. They even promised not to eat or drink with the other nobles. They often wore black clothes to show their role. Some carried dog or wolf heads on their horses to find enemies.

This period changed the social map of Russia. The oprichniki took land from the boyars and moved them. In the province of Suzdal, many nobles lost their homes. The oprichniki gained wealth and land from these seizures. They also targeted merchants and the church for money. This helped the Tsar pay for his many wars. It was a time of great change for the Russian people.
