They were a tribal confederation, which means many different groups joined together. This large group became a major power in East Asia. Their history is a story of moving, fighting, and building a strong empire.

To build their empire, the Xiongnu people worked together under a single leader.

This leader held the title of Chanyu. By uniting many tribes, they could form much larger armies. They also learned to use new ways to organize their people. During times of peace, they even learned farming from their neighbors.

They even began living in homes similar to those used by the Han people.

Long ago, the Slab Grave culture lived in the same areas.

Genetic research shows these people were the main ancestors of the Xiongnu. The Xiongnu rose to power after the late 4th century BC. They first lived under the control of a group called the Yuezhi. Eventually, the Xiongnu overthrew them to become the dominant power on the steppes. This change helped them grow into a very large and organized empire.

One important leader was named Touman, who ruled around 220 BC.

In 215 BC, a Chinese general named Meng Tian fought the Xiongnu. This battle forced Touman and his people to move north. In 209 BC, Touman's son, Modu Chanyu, became the new leader. Modu was very important because he united the tribes into a powerful empire. Under his rule, the Xiongnu became a great threat to the Chinese dynasties.

For many years, the Xiongnu and the Han dynasty had a complex relationship.

They went through long periods of peace and many periods of war. Eventually, the Han dynasty won a very long conflict against them. This led to the Xiongnu splitting into two separate groups. Many Xiongnu people were also moved into lands held by the Han. Even after their empire ended, their descendants went on to found new states in China.
