The Khitan people were a group of nomadic people from East Asia.

They lived in parts of modern Mongolia, Northeast China, and the Russian Far East. These people moved from place to place following the seasons. They relied on horses for their daily lives and livelihoods.

Their men practiced archery to hunt for food. They also drank a drink called kumiss. The Khitan language is now extinct, but it was related to Mongolic languages. Some people think their name means "cold" or "frosty." This might be because they lived near cold rivers and mountains.

At first, the Khitan were organized into eight different tribes.

These tribes included groups like the Xiwandan and the Tuliuhan. They shared power by rotating leadership every three years. Later, the Dahe clan unified these tribes into a federation. This new group could raise 34,000 troops for military use. They used a system called "Shixuan" to choose leaders. Instead of just following a son, they chose leaders based on talent. This helped the Dahe clan manage foreign affairs for the other tribes.

The Khitan are most famous for leading the Liao dynasty.

After this, a leader named Yelü Dashi led a group westward. They established a new group called the Qara Khitai in Central Asia. This Western Liao dynasty lasted for nearly one hundred years. It only fell in 1218 when the Mongol Empire arrived. The Khitan also founded other groups like the Northern and Eastern Liao. They even founded the Qutlugh-Khanid dynasty in Persia.

The Khitan left a big mark on the world.

In the past, people in Central Asia used the word "Khitai" to mean China. This word traveled to Europe and became the name "Cathay." Even today, some people use words related to Khitay to talk about China. The modern Daur people in Northeast China are the genetic descendants of the Khitan. This shows how the history of one group of people connects to others today. Their story helps us understand how much the world has changed.
