history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Parhae was a large and diverse kingdom in East Asia. It was founded in the year 698 by a leader named Dae Joyeong. At its largest size, the kingdom covered many different areas. It included parts of modern Northeast China and the northern Korean Peninsula. It also reached into the southeastern part of the Russian Far East. This kingdom was home to many different groups of people living together.

The kingdom grew through both struggle and careful leadership. After the fall of the Goguryeo state, Dae Joyeong led refugees and Mohe tribes eastward. He won a major victory at the Battle of Tianmenling against Tang forces. Following this win, he established his new state at Dongmo Mountain. At first, Parhae had a difficult relationship with the powerful Tang dynasty. They often had military and political conflicts during these early years. However, the two sides eventually became friendly and shared many things.

Different groups of people made up the population of Parhae. The ruling class was made of people from the old Goguryeo state. These leaders brought many traditions with them to the new land. They used special heating systems called ondol to keep homes warm. They also used specific styles of pottery and built unique tombs. Most of the common people were from the Mohe tribes. This mix of people is a major topic for historians today.

Parhae held a special place in the region for many years. By the end of the 8th century, the Tang dynasty respected the kingdom. They even called it the "Prosperous Country of the East Ocean." This shows how much the kingdom had grown and succeeded. In 713, the Tang officially recognized the ruler with a noble title. This helped Parhae gain more status in international politics. The kingdom remained a strong power in the East for a long time.

Eventually, the era of the Parhae kingdom came to an end. In the year 926, the Liao dynasty conquered the land. Even after the fall, the people of Parhae stayed together for three more centuries. They lived under the Liao and Jin dynasties as a distinct group. Finally, the population disappeared under Mongol rule. Today, scholars from Korea, China, and Russia still study Parhae. They work to understand its borders and its many different cultures.
