The kingdom sat on the southern and central parts of the land. Silla was one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. The other two kingdoms were Baekje and Goguryeo. Silla was the smallest of the three groups. It had about 850,000 people living in 170,000 households. This was much smaller than Baekje, which had 3,800,000 people.

Some stories say a man named Hyeokgeose founded the kingdom. One legend says he was born from an egg. Another story says he hatched from an egg laid by a white horse. The kingdom was first called Saro-guk. Later, the name changed to Silla. The capital city was called Seorabeol. This name eventually became the modern city of Seoul.

Different families ruled Silla at different times. The Miryang Park clan ruled for 232 years. After them, the Wolseong Seok clan ruled for 172 years. Finally, the Gyeongju Kim clan ruled for 586 years.

The people of Silla were also called Gyerim. This name means "rooster forest." This name came from a forest near the capital city.

Silla grew much stronger over many years. It first took control of the Gaya confederacy. Later, Silla made smart choices about its neighbors. It formed alliances with Sui China and Tang China. These allies helped Silla win big wars. Silla conquered Baekje in the year 660. Then, it conquered Goguryeo in the year 668.

History shows how Silla changed over time. After its long rule, the kingdom split into smaller parts. These parts were the Later Three Kingdoms, Later Baekje, and Taebong. Eventually, the kingdom came to an end. In the year 935, a new group called Goryeo took power.
