Unified Silla

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Unified Silla was a special time in Korean history. It began after the Silla kingdom conquered Goguryeo in 668 AD. This event ended the Three Kingdoms period. Before this, three different groups lived on the peninsula. Silla joined with the Tang dynasty to win wars. They first defeated the kingdom of Baekje in 660. Then, they fought to bring the land together.

This new era unified the central and southern parts of the land. The people called this "the unity of three kingdoms." They felt very proud of being one people.

Life in Silla was very organized and busy. The capital city was Gyeongju, also called Seorabeol. It was a huge place for that time. In fact, it was the fourth-largest city in the world. The government used a system called the "bone clan class." This meant a small group of powerful people ruled. They kept their power by using this social rank.

Silla also kept very careful records of its people. Leaders counted every town and its population. They even recorded the number of cows and horses. This helped the government manage the large kingdom.

Silla was also a master of the sea. They were great at trading with other lands. Silla sailors traveled between China, Korea, and Japan. Some Silla people even lived in communities in China. A famous leader named Chang Pogo helped rule the seas.

Because of this, Silla was very rich. They traded goods across the waters of East Asia. This made them a very important part of the world. They were like the great sea traders of the Mediterranean. Their influence reached many different shores.

Art and science grew very quickly during this golden age. Many people followed the religion of Buddhism. They built beautiful things like the Pulguk Temple. This temple has stone stairs and lovely pagodas. Another amazing place is the Seokguram grotto. It is a granite cave with a large Buddha statue.

Silla people were also very smart with technology. They used woodblock printing to make books. One print from 751 CE is one of the oldest in the world. They even studied the stars to help with farming. This helped them predict eclipses in the sky.

Unified Silla lasted for 267 years. It was a time of great culture and change. However, there was also some political trouble. Rebel groups caused fights in the northern lands. Eventually, the kingdom began to change. In 935, the last king was Gyeongsun. He gave control to a new group called Goryeo.

This brought the long Silla era to an end. Even though the kingdom fell, its art and ideas stayed. Many things they built are still famous today.
