history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Long ago, the Silla kingdom grew very large. In the 7th century, Silla joined with the Tang dynasty. They fought against the kingdoms of Baekje and Goguryeo. By 668 AD, Silla had won. This started a new time called Unified Silla. The people felt proud of this unity. They called it the unity of three kingdoms.

Silla was a very rich and busy place. Its capital city was Gyeongju. At that time, it was the fourth-largest city in the world. Silla people were masters of the sea. They sailed to China and Japan to trade goods. They even had small groups of people living far away in China.

This was a golden age for art. Many people followed Buddhism. They built grand stone temples and pagodas. One famous site is the Seokguram grotto. It is a cave shrine with a large Buddha statue. Silla also used woodblock printing. They used this to make books. This is some of the oldest printed material in the world. Unified Silla lasted for 267 years. In 935, the Goryeo kingdom took over.
