A long time ago, Korea was split into parts. This was the Later Three Kingdoms period. It started around the year 890. It lasted until about 936 AD.

For a long time, one group called Silla ruled. But then, people began to rebel. This means they fought against the rulers. One man was named Kyŏn Hwŏn. He took a place called Gwangju in 892. He then made a new land called Later Baekje. He called it a kingdom in the year 900. He ruled from a place called Jeonju.

Another group was called Goryeo. Goryeo grew much stronger over time. They worked to bring the lands back together. This led to many wars. In 935, the last Silla ruler gave up. He surrendered to Goryeo. In 936, Goryeo took over Later Baekje. This ended the period of the three kingdoms. The land was joined under one rule once more.
