He was born in 872 in Southern Mongolia. His childhood was quite difficult and full of trouble. His grandfather died during a conflict between different tribes. Because of this, his father and uncles had to run away. His grandmother even had to hide him to keep him safe. Later, legends said his birth was very special. One story says his mother dreamt the sun fell into her arms. Another legend says he could walk when he was only three months old.

Abaoji worked hard to become a powerful leader. He first became the chieftain of the Yila tribe in 901. In 903, he was named the commander of the Khitan military. He led 70,000 cavalry riders into Shanxi in 905 to make a bond with a leader named Li Keyong. By 907, he became the khagan, which means the Khan of khans. In 916, he became an emperor and started the Liao dynasty.

He used his skill to win over enemies and make his tribe stronger.

He created new ways to run a large empire. One big idea was a dual system of government. This meant nomadic people followed steppe traditions. At the same time, settled people in China and Balhae followed civil rules. He also used many new styles for his royal court. In 916, he took the title of Celestial Emperor. He even named his son, Yelü Bei, as his heir. This was a new idea for Khitan society.

Abaoji built many things to help his empire grow. In 918, he built a new walled city. He also built a Chinese-style city next to it for shops and warehouses. Later, his people built five capital cities to help them rule. He also helped create new ways for people to write. In 920, he ordered a Khitan script to be made. In 925, his brother Yelü Diela developed a different script. These tools helped the Khitan people manage their large lands.

By the time he died, Abaoji had changed the map. He ruled over Inner Mongolia, northern China, and southern Manchuria. His empire reached the Yalu River and the Ussuri River. He also captured the entire Balhae state. Abaoji died from typhoid fever on 6 September 926. He was 54 years old at the time.
