A leader named Modu helped them grow strong. He made them a great group. They lived on the big plains in the east.
They sometimes fought with lands to the south. They also had times of peace. This helped them live in new ways. They even used new ways to build homes.

The Xiongnu were a group of people who lived on the grass lands.

Before the Xiongnu, a group called the Slab Grave culture lived there. Scientists found that these people were the main ancestors of the Xiongnu. Later, a leader named Touman led the group. In 215 BC, a Chinese general named Meng Tian fought them. The Xiongnu had to flee north to find new land.
In 209 BC, a new leader named Modu Chanyu took over. He made the Xiongnu a strong empire. He joined many tribes into one big group. This helped them make large armies. They lived in a time of both peace and war with the Han dynasty.

The Xiongnu were a powerful tribal confederation of nomadic peoples. They lived on the eastern Eurasian Steppe for many centuries. This region included the Mongolian Plateau, Siberia, and parts of Inner Mongolia.

To understand the Xiongnu, we must look at their ancestors. Before they rose to power, the Slab Grave culture lived in central Mongolia.
The Xiongnu rose to dominance through a series of major shifts. In the late 4th century BC, they emerged as a new threat. They were initially controlled by a group called the Yuezhi. Eventually, the Xiongnu overthrew the Yuezhi to take control of the steppes.
Leadership was central to the strength of the Xiongnu. Their supreme leader held the title of Chanyu. One of the first known leaders was Touman, who reigned around 220 BC. In 215 BC, the Chinese General Meng Tian led a campaign against him. This military pressure forced the Xiongnu to flee north into the Mongolian Plateau.
The relationship between the Xiongnu and the Han dynasty was very complex. They experienced long periods of peace and many periods of war. They also had times of subjugation where one side controlled the other.
Eventually, a centuries-long conflict with the Han dynasty changed everything. The Han dynasty ultimately defeated the Xiongnu. This defeat caused the large confederation to split into two separate parts.
Today, we learn about the Xiongnu through many different clues. Archaeogenetics helps us trace their biological history and connections to the Huns.
