Wei Qing was a prominent military general and politician during the Western Han dynasty in China. He is most famous for his successful military campaigns against the Xiongnu, a nomadic group to the north. His life is often described as a journey from humble beginnings to immense power and wealth. Wei Qing was born Zheng Qing in Linfen, Shanxi. He eventually adopted his mother's surname, Wei, to distance himself from his father's family.

Wei Qing's early life was marked by significant hardship and social isolation. He was born to a low-level official, Zheng Ji, and a female servant named Wei Ao. Because his birth was considered illegitimate, his father's family treated him poorly. He spent much of his youth working as a lowly sheepherder. During his early teenage years, he ran away to live with his mother. He eventually found work as a stableboy at the estate of Princess Pingyang.

His social status changed dramatically through his connection to the imperial family. His sister, Wei Zifu, became a favorite of Emperor Wu. This connection led to Wei Qing serving as a horseman in the Jianzhang Camp, which was the Emperor's royal guard. He survived a dangerous attempt on his life by the powerful Grand Princess Guantao. After being rescued by his fellow guards, Emperor Wu appointed him to several high-ranking roles. These positions included Chief of Jianzhang Camp, Chief of Staff, and Chief Councillor. This rise established the Wei and Huo families as major political forces.

Wei Qing proved his military talent through a series of increasingly large campaigns. In 129 BC, he led a successful long-distance raid on the Xiongnu holy site, Longcheng. This victory earned him the title of acting Marquess of Guannei. In 127 BC, he commanded 40,000 cavalrymen in a swift operation in the Longxi region. His forces captured over 3,000 prisoners and seized more than a million cattle. This specific battle was so efficient that his troops returned without any casualties. This success led to his promotion as the Marquess of Changping.

As his reputation grew, Wei Qing was given even greater responsibilities. In 124 BC, he led a night assault against the Xiongnu's Right Worthy Prince. This mission resulted in the capture of 15,000 prisoners and millions of cattle. For this achievement, he was named the Grand General of All Armed Forces. His wealth and status expanded significantly, with his march growing by 8,700 households. He also became a mentor to his nephew, the famous general Huo Qubing.

One of the most significant events in his career was the Mobei Campaign in 119 BC. The name Mobei refers to a campaign conducted north of the Gobi Desert. Emperor Wu organized a massive force to strike the Xiongnu headquarters directly. Wei Qing commanded a corps of 50,000 cavalry and 100,000 infantry and charioteers. During a major battle, a sandstorm reduced visibility on the battlefield. Wei Qing used the cover of the storm to launch a pincer attack. This tactical move broke the Xiongnu lines and caused a massive retreat.

The Mobei Campaign resulted in approximately 19,000 enemy deaths. It forced the Xiongnu to retreat further and weakened their economic power. Wei Qing's use of heavy-armored chariots in ring formations was highly effective. Later Chinese tacticians studied these defensive and offensive maneuvers for their brilliance. Wei Qing's career fundamentally changed the borders and security of the Han dynasty. He remains a central figure in the history of Chinese military strategy.
