Her brothers were also well known in China.

Ban Zhao spent much of her life studying and writing. She was born in a place called Anling. When she was fourteen, she married a man named Cao Shishu. Her husband died when she was still young. She did not marry again after that. Instead, she chose to focus on her learning. She wrote many different things like poems and essays. She also studied math and the stars. She was a very busy and clever woman.

She did a great job helping to finish a big history book. This book is called the Book of Han. Her brother, Ban Gu, had started the work. But he died in the year 92. Ban Zhao stepped in to help finish it. She added a part called the Eight Tables. She also added details about the emperor's mother. This was information that people did not usually keep. Her work helped keep the history of the Han dynasty alive.

Ban Zhao also worked in a very important place. She was a librarian at the royal court.

She led a staff of assistants in the library. She taught other scholars how to do their work. She even taught Empress Deng Sui. The Empress often asked Ban Zhao for advice. Because of this, Ban Zhao became a Lady-in-waiting. The Empress even gave jobs to Ban Zhao's sons. This showed how much the Empress trusted her.

Many people still talk about Ban Zhao today. She wrote a famous book called Lessons for Women. This book was a guide for how women should act. Some people think it was a way to help women. Other people think it told women to be too quiet. Her daughter-in-law tried to collect all her writings later. Most of those writings are lost to us now. However, her name is still very famous.
