People also call it the Records of the Grand Historian. This text is very important to Chinese civilization. It was the first of many history books written for the empire. It covers a huge span of 2,500 years. The stories go from the time of the legendary Yellow Emperor all the way to the reign of Emperor Wu of Han. This book helped people understand their own past. It even set the model for how future historians would write their own stories.

Sima Qian was the man who wrote the Shiji.

His father, Sima Tan, was the Grand Historian for the Han dynasty court. Sima Tan started the big project and left behind many notes. After his father died, Sima Qian finished the work. He was a very careful researcher. He did not just read old books written on bamboo. He also traveled around China to find the truth. He even talked to people who saw events happen with their own eyes.

Sima Qian organized his book into five special parts. The first part is called the "Basic Annals." These chapters cover different dynasties and famous rulers. The second part uses "Tables" to show family lines and dates. This helped readers follow complicated histories. The third part is called "Treatises." These chapters explain things like music, stars, and rivers. The fourth part is the "Hereditary Houses." This section looks at different states and leaders through time.

The largest part of the book is the "Ranked Biographies."

This section makes up 42% of the whole work. It contains 69 chapters about 130 different people. These people include famous thinkers like Laozi. Sima Qian used small stories to show what people were really like. He wanted to show their character through their actions. Because of this, his writing feels very lively. Many of his stories are still used in Chinese language today.

Writing this book was a very hard job.

Sima Qian wrote on thin strips of bamboo. These strips were tied together in bundles. The whole book was likely between 466 and 700 bundles. This would have been very heavy and hard to move. The book has about 526,500 Chinese characters. That is much longer than the Old Testament. Even though it was hard to carry, the Shiji changed how people saw the world. It remains a foundational text for history.
