The book tells stories from 2,500 years of history. It covers many kings and leaders. Sima Qian did not just read old books. He traveled and talked to people to find the truth. He even used eye-witness accounts to help his writing.

He organized the book into five parts. One part has lists of rulers. Another part has tables to show family lines. He also wrote about music and stars. Some parts tell stories about famous people. These are called biographies. These stories use small tales to show how people acted.

Sima Qian wrote on thin pieces of bamboo. These were tied together in bundles. The whole work was very large and heavy. This book helped shape how people see China's past. It set the way for all other history books in China.
