Huangdi Neijing

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Huangdi Neijing is a very important set of ancient Chinese books. It is often called the Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor. These texts have been the main guide for Chinese medicine for over two thousand years.

The work is actually two different books. The first part is called the Suwen, or Basic Questions. This part teaches the basic ideas of health and how to find sickness. The second part is called the Lingshu. This part explains acupuncture, which is a way to heal using small needles. Together, these two books are known as the Neijing.

The books work by using a special way of talking. They are written as a dialogue, which is a conversation between people. In these pages, the mythical Yellow Emperor talks to six of his ministers.

This style of writing might have been a clever trick. The authors may have used these legendary characters to avoid taking credit for the work. This way, they would not be blamed for their ideas. The books explain that health comes from balance. They teach that things like diet, feelings, and the weather can change how we feel.

Finding out exactly when these books were written is a big job for historians. For a long time, people thought they were older. However, new discoveries changed what we know. In the 1970s, researchers found old medical texts in a place called Mawangdui in Hunan.

These silk texts were sealed in a royal tomb in 168 BCE. By comparing the two, experts like Jianmin Li and Donald Harper realized the Neijing came later. Many scholars now believe the texts were put together around the first century BCE.

Many different people helped shape the books we read today. A scholar named Huangfu Mi lived from 215 to 282 CE. He was the first to say that the old lists of books were actually two separate works. Later, a man named Wang Bing worked on the text for twelve years. He finished his big revision in 762 CE.

Wang Bing added over 5,000 notes to help people understand. He also organized the text into eighty-one chapters. The version most people use today was made by an Imperial Editorial Office in 1053 CE.

The ideas in the Neijing connect the human body to the whole world. The text says that a person is like a small version of the universe. This is called a microcosm.

The book uses symbols like yin and yang to show how things work. It also talks about qi, which is a type of energy. The five elements and things like wind or heat are also very important. To stay healthy, a person must keep these natural forces in balance. This is just like how the weather and the seasons stay in balance in the big world.
