Li Shizhen was a famous doctor and writer from China. He lived during the Ming dynasty. He is best known for a huge book called the Compendium of Materia Medica. This book is a very important guide for medicine. It helps people understand how to use things from nature to stay well. Li spent many years making sure the information was correct. He wanted to help people by fixing mistakes found in older books.

Li worked on his big book for 27 years. He did not just sit in one place to write it. He traveled to see many different plants and animals himself. He also read over 800 other books to learn more. He wanted to group things in a way that made sense. Instead of just listing items, he sorted them by where they lived. He put water plants in one group and plants from rocks in another. He even grouped plants that had a sweet smell together.

Li's life changed many times before he finished his work. He was born on July 3, 1518, in Hubei. His father was a doctor and a scholar. Li tried to take a big government exam three times. He did not pass those exams, so he turned to medicine instead. He became a doctor and even worked in Beijing. He was an assistant president at the Imperial Medical Institute. Eventually, he left that job to go back to being a doctor.

The Compendium of Materia Medica is filled with amazing details. It has 1,892 entries about different substances. This includes more than 1,800 traditional Chinese medicines. The book describes 1,094 different herbs. It tells about their taste, shape, and how to use them. There are also 1,100 drawings to show what things look like. The book lists 11,000 prescriptions, which are recipes for medicine. About 8,000 of these recipes were brand new ideas.

Li Shizhen believed in staying healthy before getting sick. He said curing a disease is like digging a well only after you are thirsty. He wrote over 500 ways to keep the body strong. He even invented 50 of those methods himself. His work covers many subjects like plants, animals, and minerals. Today, his book has been translated into many languages. Only five original copies of his book still exist in the world. One copy is even in the Library of Congress in the United States.
