Ban Gu (AD 32–92) was a prominent Chinese historian, poet, and politician. He lived during the Eastern Han dynasty. He is most famous for compiling the *Book of Han*, also known as the *Hanshu*. This work is the second of China's 24 dynastic histories. Ban Gu was also a master of a literary form called *fu*. A *fu* is a type of writing that combines prose and poetry. Many of his *fu* poems were later collected in the *Wen Xuan*, a famous anthology.

Ban Gu belonged to an exceptionally distinguished family. His ancestors lived in the state of Chu during the Warring States period. During the reign of the First Emperor, an ancestor named Ban Yi fled north to Loufan. This area is near the Yanmen Pass in modern northern Shanxi Province. By the early Han Dynasty, the Ban family became important on the northwestern frontier. They managed a large business herding and trading thousands of cattle, oxen, and horses. This business helped encourage other families to move to the frontier.

Family members were highly successful in many different fields. Ban Gu's father, Ban Biao, was a prominent historian. His great-aunt, Consort Ban, was a well-known scholar and poet. Ban Gu had a twin brother named Ban Chao. Ban Chao was a famous military leader and an explorer of Central Asia. He also had a sister named Ban Zhao. She became one of the most famous female scholars in Chinese history. She later helped complete the *Book of Han* after Ban Gu's death.

Ban Gu's career was shaped by his father's unfinished work. Ban Biao died in AD 54 when Ban Gu was twenty-two years old. Ban Gu stayed in his family home in Anling to work on his father's history. This book was intended to be a sequel to Sima Qian's *Records of the Grand Historian*. During this time, Ban Gu also wrote a long *fu* titled "Fu on Communicating with the Hidden." This poem is famous for using the *fu* form to discuss deep philosophical questions.

Political tension often interrupted Ban Gu's work. Around AD 60, rumors reached Emperor Ming regarding Ban Gu's writing. The imperial court feared how he might describe the transition from the Western Han to the Eastern Han. Consequently, Ban Gu was arrested and his family library was confiscated. His brother, Ban Chao, intervened to secure his release. Later, Emperor Ming gave him permission to resume his historical work in AD 66. Ban Gu then served the imperial library and the court for many years.

Ban Gu rose to high positions within the government. During the reign of Emperor Zhang, he was promoted to Marshal of the Black Warrior Gate. He later served as a high-ranking literary official under Dou Xian. However, political shifts caused sudden trouble in AD 92. After Dou Xian was suspected of plotting a rebellion, Ban Gu was dismissed from office. He was arrested by a rival named Chong Jing, who was the prefect of Luoyang. Ban Gu died in prison that same year at the age of 61.

Despite these hardships, Ban Gu's legacy remains massive. He included a geographical chapter in the *Book of Han*. This decision set a new standard for all future Chinese dynastic histories. This chapter helped influence the development of the ancient Chinese gazetteer. Some scholars even argue that his writing style shaped how people view Chinese history through a dynastic framework. His work remains a vital tool for understanding the Han era and the structure of historical writing in Asia.
